YOU may use shopping bags all the time or you have been separating domestic waste but all of us are obliged to do more for our ailing planet.
It is that time of the year to reinforce the message again. The Star will do so in a fun way at its Green Day Celebration 2009 slated for June 7 from 8am to 3pm at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Kepong, in conjunction with World Environment Day.
A host of activities have been lined up to envelop the forest reserve with a carnival-like atmosphere while spreading the message of “Go Green, Live Green”, which has also been made the theme of this year’s celebration.
First of all, it is an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature. Join the Malaysian Nature Society for nature walks on FRIM’s Keruing Trail, from 11am to noon and 2pm to 3pm. Each session is limited to a maximum of 20 people on a first-come-first-served basis. Also, learn some recycling tips the fun way via its 3R and water conservation board games.
FRIM will be conducting guided nature trail and canopy walks at 9am, 10.30am and noon. Registration is free but the programme is limited to 35 participants per session, so be sure you put your name down at the Star Pavilion early!
Alternatively, check out FRIM’s unique tree climbing demonstration at 10am, 11am or 12.30pm to explore nature the more adventurous way.
BonusLink will run a variety of activities with sand art for children being among the highlights while Philips energy-saving bulbs will be given away at the Star Pavilion.
Wondering what to do with your old mobile phones? Bring your old phones of any brand, complete with batteries and related accessories, for recycling at the Nokia booth. For every phone recycled, consumers get to adopt a tree planted in their name in Lombok, Indonesia and viewable via Google Earth. You will also stand a chance to win a Nokia phone on the spot.
Justlife will demonstrate how to make your own garbage enzyme and conduct an “Earth-Saving Diet” presentation from 10am to 11am. The Permanis Recycling Stop will give away a bottle of Revive to the first 200 people who bring items for recycling.
WWF Malaysia will collect signatures in support of its ongoing turtle campaign and the public can also buy WWF merchandise there or take photos with animal standees for a donation of RM5.
The celebration will also sizzle with colours and rhythms. The Drum Circle allows people to experience the musical wonders of everyday implements amid lush greenery, Kuntum will hold a colouring session at 11am in a lively atmosphere created by the ever-energetic BRATS with face painting and balloon sculpture.
Those who want to try out in-line skating can also catch Skateline there.
The green fest will also give folk the chance to do some shopping. There will be a Car Boot Sale whereby FRIM has taken up six cars while the others have been made available to the public. Interested parties can contact 03-6279 7591/ 7577 (Hazlin/ Salmah) to register.
